New Lanark

Founded: 1786
Situated on the River Clyde in South Lanarkshire, New Lanark was founded by David Dale, who built a cotton mill and housing for the mill workers. Dale’s son-in-law, the Welsh philanthropist and social reformer, Robert Owen, championed the mill as an example of utopian socialism. It is one of the first examples of what became model villages.
